Frankfurt: Mercedes-Benz F700 1.8-litre Previews S-Class’ Future

If you think that a VW Passat with a 1.4L gasoline engine (turbocharged and only in Europe of course) sounds strange then what would you say about an S-Class sized sedan equipped with a 4-cylinder 1.8L petrol unit? Bet you would change your mind if you learned that the 1.8L engine has an output of 238 Hp. -Continued after the jump

See the F700 research concept is fitted with Merc’s promising “DiesOtto” powertrain that incorporates the best features of petrol and diesel engines. The DiesOtto powetrain packs technologies like direct gasoline injection, turbocharging, a variable compression ratio, a hybrid module with an integrated starter/generator and most importantly, the controlled auto ignition, a highly efficient combustion process similar to that of a diesel.

While the 1.8 lt unit delivers 238 Hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm – 295 lbs.ft, at the same time it’s extremely frugal and eco-friendly.

“The F 700 with its innovative DIESOTTO and hybrid drive consumes just 5.3 litres of petrol per 100 kilometres (44.4 MPG)- equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 127 grams per kilometre. This value equals the fuel consumption of a modern day diesel-powered compact car, and boasts the lowest petrol consumption figures of a large luxury saloon in the history of the motor car”, explains Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management responsible for Group Research and Mercedes Car Group Development.

Now that’s what we call promising. We’ll have more on the S-Class sized F700 prototype as soon as Merc unveils more details and images.
