Rare Sbarro Mercedes-Benz Gullwing 116 6.9 found on eBay

Swiss coachbuilder Franco Sbarro is known all over the world for its extreme production and concept cars like the wacky Autobau supercar. However, it's not often that we find the firm's creations on eBay so we were surprised to see that one of its production cars from the 1980s is up for grabs on the auction site.

The Mercedes-Benz Gullwing 116 6.9 - we're not entirely sure about the name- is a odd-looking two-door Grand Tourer with gullwing-style doors.

Even though at first it appears to be based on the 1980's Mercedes W126 coupes (420 SEC / 560 SEC etc), the different styling of the roof and window lines, the dashboard and the fact that it is powered by the 6.9-liter V8 engine (not to mention the name given by the seller) point towards a modified version of the previous W116 S-Class of the 1970s.

For the record, a quick search on the internet revealed that Sbarro built a handful of similar-looking Gullwing models that were 100% based on the W126 560 SEC in the mid 1980s.

This particular example you see here is offered for sale on eBay Motors with a starting price of US$50,000.

Geneva Show: Sbarro' Autobau is Ready for Takeoff

Designed by Franco Sbarro, this 1970's-esque rocket is called the Autobau and it is built to honor Swiss racer Fredy Lienhard. Looking at it, it's no surprise that it seems to be dividing people in regards to its looks. What no one can deny, however, is the awesomeness of having a 500-horspower 12-cylinder to propel both you and its bad 1,500 kilo-self to what could only be the moon. Ah, Geneva...

GENEVA: Sbarro Jumpy Atlante Concept

Believe it or not, Sbarro’s Jumpy Atlante Concept is actually based on Citroen’s Jumper Van. And well, that’s about all the interest we’ll ever have on this one-of-a-kind 6seater Cabrio which looks like it hopped out of a "My little Pony" episode...-Continued: Click “Read More…” below to see a high-res image gallery

Sbarro Cruise Crosser to debut in Geneva

A Geneva Show without a few weird concepts from Frank Sbarro is like eating a hot dog without ketchup & mustard. We’re not quite sure yet though if the Swiss based coachbuilder will introduce another concept apart from this 6wheeler, pick-up version of the Mitsubishi Outlander based Citroen C-Crosser (we were very specific here, weren’t we…). PRESS RELEASE: SBARRO CRUISE CROSSER: BACK TO THE FUTURE!

Free and current interpretation of a car that is reminiscent of Citroën's Croisière Noire between the Cape and Paris in 1924. It is a six-wheel drive, of which four are at the rear, evoking the caterpillar tracks of the period, with plenty of space to take adventurers' bags.
